What are synthetic compounds?

  • Synthetic compounds refer to physical resources and information of various organic compounds that have high potential value for research or industrial purposes, serving as starting points for new drug or biotechnology research.
  • Compound research resources include (1) physical resources used for drug and biotechnology research, such as organic synthetic compounds and single components of natural products, and (2) structural analysis information of compounds along with data obtained from screening compounds for efficacy, toxicity, human absorption, metabolism, etc.

Applications

Research for Discovering New Drug Candidates
Research in Chemical Biology and Chemical Genomics
Research to Validate Drug Efficacy Screening Systems

Why is the cultivation of synthetic compound resources and industry important?

  • The demand for various compounds, which can be efficiently regulated, is increasing as the discovery of disease targets expands through biotechnology technologies such as genomics.
  • While major advanced countries and large pharmaceutical companies are focusing on building and developing compound libraries and management technologies, domestic pharmaceutical companies face challenges in developing libraries at a large scale and managing them effectively.
  • Due to the lack of infrastructure for managing produced compounds, compounds are often left unused or discarded, resulting in reduced efficiency in utilizing resources for new drug development and biotechnology research.

To activate independent domestic new drug development research and respond to the compound monopolization strategies of advanced countries, there is a need to develop management technologies and build infrastructure to collect and jointly utilize compounds scattered across the country.

Key Institutions and Research Cases Related to Synthetic Compound Resources

Synthetic Compound Cluster: Korea Chemical Bank (KCB)
  • An institution that collects, manages, and supports the nationwide collection and collaborative utilization of synthetic compounds and related information
  • It is the only synthetic compound distribution agency in South Korea, established in 2000, with more than 750,000 synthetic compounds in its collection, providing compounds and services that meet the needs of its users.
Korea Compound Bank, research on “Securing, Managing, and Utilizing Compound Research Results”
  • The research focuses on maximizing the utilization of compounds, which are key resources for new drug development, by enhancing the registration and management of compounds as a national compound research result management and distribution agency and a biological research resource deposit institution.
  • The research includes securing and managing compounds and related information for new drug resources, providing support for the use of compounds and data in drug development and biotechnology research, constructing a database of efficacy test results for provided compounds, and facilitating collaborative research and utilization management.
